How to introduce photography to your kid – 5 essential tips
In today’s world, most of us constantly have a camera on us via our mobile phone. We can just point and click. This makes taking photographs very easy. In addition to that, kids learn technology very fast. That is why teaching photography to kids today is easy and fun. In addition to helping them pick a new hobby, you give them an opportunity to learn a new skill and get out of the house rather than being on mobile games or video games the whole day or even worse, stuck to the television.
Letting your child control the camera has a surprising side result too. We start seeing the world via their eyes which has a very innocent and fresh outlook.
Let’s get started on the top five essential tips to introduce your child to photography.
1. Give your child access to a camera
Your child will fall in love with photography faster if they feel a sense of ownership over the camera. Give them a used one or your current one or even show them how to use the camera on an old phone of yours. Teach them to use the various features of the camera.
Once you have given it to them, step back and let them start experimenting with the camera. If you don’t want them to use an old camera, you can give them a good, inexpensive camera which is good for kids. The child-proof cameras that are available today are made especially for kids i.e. they have smaller grips and buttons and they are built to withstand drops. It would be great for your kid to have a new camera that they know is only for them. This will help reduce your interference too and allow your child to explore the camera on their own.
2. Teach the basics
When you start your kids on photography, it is important to teach them the basics. Some of the important points that you need to teach them is that they need to hold the camera steady so that they get an image in focus. One of the best ways to hold the camera steady is to use your body for support. You can demonstrate to them how to tuck their elbows against their body so that they can get support to hold the camera. They need to fill the frame with the subject of the image. They need to choose an angle to click the photo so that there background clutter is reduced as much as possible. Another important tip for a child is that they should always put the strap of the camera around their neck before they start to take photographs. A camera can easily fall from the hands of a child so this precaution is necessary.
3. Step back
Once your child has learnt the basics of photography and how they need to click photographs so that the camera is safe, the best thing that you can do for your child is to take a step back. Let them go out on their own and click the things that attract their eye. In the evening, they will come over with excitement in their eyes and show you what they have clicked. You can sit with them and make suggestions for each photo as to how they could have improved it. Make sure that you praise them for the photos which have been clicked well.
As parents, we are so used to protecting our children that we resist the need to let go and allow them to explore photography on their own. But unless they click photos on their own, they won’t be able to develop their own unique style.
4. Make clicking photographs easy and fun
As adults, we are used to advanced features and we try to explain that to our children. The problem is that when we complicate things, our children get disheartened and lose interest. The best thing you can do is just keep the camera on a point and click mode and let your child experiment with it.
Though you shouldn’t complicate things for your child when they use the camera, it doesn’t mean that you should make photography interesting by setting up challenges for them. You can ask them to click as many cars as they can or images of a certain color. Another interesting way to improve your child’s photography is to keep them as an official photographer for a family trip that you make. This allows them to capture your whole family having fun and will help them to create life-long memories.
You can also try to have a contest between your children where they can capture the most colorful photos or the photo which has the most people in it, etc.
5. Make use of the photos
The best way to encourage your child to click photos is to use the photos actively. You can get mugs online with the photos that they have clicked and they can use it daily. You can also take prints of the photos and stick it on the refrigerator. Another great way to use their photos is to make them into cards and send them for festivals to your friends and family.
Conclusion
Introducing your child to photography is introducing them to a whole new world of colors and images. Many children turn their childhood hobby into a life-long passion and even their career.
A quick recap of the essential tips when you introduce your child to photography: You should get them a camera which they can use completely for themselves. You should teach them the basics and once you have taught them the basics, you should let go and allow them to explore photography on their own. You should make clicking photos exciting, fun and enjoyable by setting up small challenges and competitions and finally, it would be great and would give your child a tremendous sense of validation if you print and use the photos.

A few facts about today's tweens...
Our special 'tween sessions aim to encourage healthy body image and self-esteem concepts to children in this transitional and influential time of their lives. It is a great way to tell your child that they are cherished for who they are and that they are as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. Not only is the final product, a portrait for your child to be proud of, the goal; but the experience of the portrait session itself, is one, that they will walk away from feeling extra special.
For a limited time (while supplies last), your 'tween will receive a AHP Cherished t-shirt and a This is Me Girl's Journal with the purchase of a portrait session. Available for children ages 10-12.
Please contact the studio for more information about the sessions.

What is that you might ask?
Well, PPA awards this degree in recognition of superior photographic competence demonstrated through photographic competition, advanced education and service to the profession.
A lot of time and energy, tears and excitement have gone into the earning of the degree. I had many mentors along the way, nudging me along the path and helping me to push beyond my comfortable borders in order to strive for excellence in my craft.
My friend, Jeff Dachowski, M.Photog.Cr., CPP was one of these mentors, and I was honored that he agreed to be my sponsor at the degree ceremony and walk with me on stage and hang the degree on my neck. Here we are with PPA President, Rob Behm, M.Photog.Cr., CPP the night of the ceremony.
It feels validating to receive this accolade, but with any artist's craft, the journey does not end. You have to constantly be honing your skills and reaching beyond. I am on to the next thing. I encourage you to set a goal for yourself and work towards it.
yours truly,
Allison McGrail, Master Photographer
PS: Here is my 15 seconds on stage. I made it across without tripping!

Big changes have been happening this summer for AHP! I have moved! But don't worry, I haven't gone far, just one mile down the road. I have moved the business out of my home into a 1600 square foot commercial space in New Boston that is surrounded by the library, the post office, the pizza place and my favorite, the river! I will have the space now to better accomindate my clients, host larger family sessions, as well as various classes and workshops. I am working hard at renovating the space to fall in line with my vision and I can't wait to share it with everyone. I am already working out of the new space, but plan to have a grand reopening event in late September. Also in September, I will be offering a Clicks for Kids class after school, a few Barre classes, and my ever popular Back to School portrait event. Keep a look out for more info to follow on these. Oh! And AHP is sporting a new logo for our fresh new look!

They asked if I would use one of their wreaths in one of my sessions, and I said I would love to, of course. What a fun idea!
So I chose their Eastern wreath. I loved the simplicity of it. It came a few days later and it is one of the most beautiful wreaths I have seen! It is made of white pine instead of the more traditional balsam and has Washington grown wheat and broad flat salal leaves incorporated into it.
Here are a few images from the sessions I was able to incorporate the wreath into.

]]>I recently received word that I passed the requirements to become a Certified Professional Photographer! I am thrilled to have accomplished this goal. I am 1 of only 19 in New Hampshire! So what does that mean? Well, it means according Professional Photographers of America, I have met a certain standard of what a professional photographer should know and produce the quality of work that a professional in the industry should create. It is a two part process, first a proctored exam, and then a portfolio review of 15 images. Six images were compulsory and showed a certain technique, and nine were client images. All these had to be taken from my last two years of work. Here are the images that I submitted in my portfolio.
So why would this matter? You can certainly work as a professional photographer without being certified, but why did I set this goal for myself? I believe that it will give my clients confidence in their experience with me. Here are the things that you will get with a certified professional photographer (taken from PPA's website)
Consistency. CPPs know how to achieve great results—every time. You get a strong collection of images that tell your story, not a few lucky snapshots, and you will work with someone who knows how to produce a quality image under any circumstances.
Technical Skills. CPPs are more than picture takers. They are students of art, lighting, posing, fashion and even interior design. They combine these elements to create images that fit your unique style and become works of art you will treasure for generations.
Unique Artistry. CPPs have the skills to create unique, customized works of art—not cookie-cutter pictures. They follow an artistic vision. It’s your story captured as a collection of art.
Professionalism. When you hire a CPP, you know you're getting someone who is willing to go the extra mile to deliver the best possible images. They are business owners who thrive on customer service and satisfaction, and they continuously aim to produce products that exceed your—and their—best expectations. These images are keepsakes whose stories you'll tell time and time again and treasure forever.

First of all here are my classes!
Now for some of the projects we did!
Sun prints are fast and easy and no chemicals or darkroom required. You can get kits right from amazon.
Next we made Chemigrams. This involves photo chemicals and photo paper but no darkroom! Basically we dipped leaves into photo developer and pressed on the photo paper and then washed in fixer.
So cool, right?
Then we made citrasolvs, which are made by spraying the strong natural cleaner, Citrasolv, on national geographic pages which turns the ink to liquid and makes awesome effects.
We then used the citrasolvs to collage with. I asked them to incorporate the summer's theme, which is "Fearless" into the collages, but some forgot the "less" part, lol.
Our 4th project was the biggest and best! We made photo transfers onto wood. I had my husband pull some authentic Gander Brook wood from the burn pile and cut into pieces for the campers. Each camper choose a favorite image, which I had printed in reverse onto regular printer paper with a LASER printer (not ink jet). We then glued them face down to the wood, using a gel medium and let dry. Then came the hard part, which was removing the back of the paper with a wet wash cloth and our fingers. The first layer came off easy but then it became tedious as we had to continue to rub the tiny bits of paper away with our fingers. Our finger tips became raw and I had to keep saying that this was a lesson in PERSEVERANCE! The final step was to add a top coat of mod podge to seal them.
They came out great! Other lessons learned was that there is beauty in imperfection and to realize that the end product might not come out how you thought and that is OK!
Some close ups!
The best part of the whole experience was hearing what the kids said...
"I am so proud of my piece"
"I have done the best artwork I have ever done in this class"
"I think I have found my career."
"I am so happy with how it came out!" (from one girl who was very disappointed at how her photo transfer was coming.)
Thinking it may be fun to do a summer camp some time along these ideas here at the studio! Would you have a child interested in this? Or even yourself? Let me know!

I was a senior in high school back in 1995. My hair had finally recovered from the horrible, chopped-way-too-short haircut that I started 8th grade with, and was now long, very long, and still very curly. I had gotten rid of the glasses that graced my nose a few years earlier in yearbook pictures, and now wore contacts. Braces were gone too. In one picture I’m wearing my cap and gown. In another, I’m holding my fluffy white cat, “Kitt” who I literally grew up with. And in another, I’m posing in my riding outfit, reminding me of the day when my grandfather sent me a horse and the ensuing years of equine love that eventually dwindled as I got busier and busier with high school activities. Location was on the same university campus where I had attended high school and where I would go on to attend and graduate from college. All pieces of my story.
So what is your story? For many seniors, this year in your life will be one of the most memorable and eventful; the end of many familiar things, and the beginning of new adventures. Your senior portrait is meant to reflect who you are at this time in your life, and give glimpses into the person you are becoming. Think about the images from your portrait session as telling a story.
Thinking about your senior portrait, but not sure where to start? Here are some ideas…
~Location: Your senior portrait can be in the studio, at a location of your choice, or both. Do you have a special place that really speaks of who you are? Choosing the right location can help you feel at ease, convey a meaningful part of your story and spark conversation for generations to come.
~“But I like to go barefoot!” No problem. Your clothing choices are a huge part of the person you are. Choose clothing that’s comfortable and shows your personality. Choose colors that will complement both your skin-tone and your environment.
~Don’t be afraid to speak up! Have an idea for the best, epic photo of all time, but wonder if Allison will think you’re crazy? Remember, some of the best images have come from “thinking outside the box.”
~Bring a friend! Close friends can be a major part of your high school memories. They’re the ones who have shared in your story. So, feel free to bring along a friend and include them in some of your pictures.
You have a story to tell – the story of who you are, and of who you are becoming. So, let’s make some amazing memories of your story through images! Congratulations on being a senior in high school! May this year be a wonderful journey for you.
~Jessica Clater

Yep, I’m one of those people. I don’t have a wedding album, just a proof album.
My wedding day was one of the most amazing days of my life! I love my husband like crazy to this day and yet, I never ordered a wedding album. In fact, it was probably three years before I even had a portrait on my wall from that day. And even though, through a set of circumstances, I ended up with all the negatives from my wedding, I still haven’t designed and printed my own album…and I’m in the business. You know, the plumber has leaky faucets in his house, the accountant is late with his taxes, and I, a photographer, don’t have a wedding album.
I really don’t have an excuse. I’ve been married for twelve years to the love of my life and I’ve been a photographer for the majority of that time. But, life got busy and there were other priorities with my time and money that always seemed to pop up.
Which brings me to the topic of this post – the “Images on CD only” packages that many brides are requesting. In today’s digital photography world, many brides are opting to pay only for the photographer’s time and travel and then a CD of images. This type of pricing is a huge leap from the days of package pricing that included a designed wedding album and other tangible values like framed and matted wall prints. This cost-cutting mindset may sound great at the outset to a bride who is trying to keep to a budget. However, the problem comes when the happy couple steps out of the car or off the plane or boat from their honeymoon and into…life (which may include an adorable baby, or two, much sooner than anticipated).
With the entire process of not only narrowing down and choosing images, but also designing pages and choosing covers, styles and a place to print their album, there’s a possibility that a bride may not get around to having a finished album in hand for years, if ever.
The wedding album, wall portraits, parent albums, thank you cards…all of these are the final, finished, beautiful product of beautifully produced images. These precious memories, captured on one of the most special days of a couple’s life are meant to be touched and seen often, daily. They should be there over the mantle or on the table, beautifully displayed for friends, family and guests to see. They should be there when that first child is born – a daily reminder of the love that brought them into the world.
As photographers, our images are a form of art. The final piece is not just the image itself sitting somewhere on a CD or on a flash drive or on a facebook page. The finished piece of art includes the presentation: the carefully chosen mat and frame that perfectly complement and display the portrait of the bride, glowing as she waits to walk down the aisle. The full page spread in the album depicting each precious moment captured during the first dance, each image carefully placed and enhanced by design details on the page.
When a client pays a photographer for their services, they’re not just paying for pictures. Because, you see, photographers aren’t just, well, photographers! They’re artists, designers, dreamers. The final, finished product should be a true work of art and design. When a client who isn’t a photographer chooses to quickly print a few images from their CD at the local drugstore, so much of the purity and beauty of an image can be lost.
So, trust us. The extra expense of having a finished album and wall portrait from your wedding will be well worth it.
Yep, I’m one of those people. Someday I’ll have a wedding album, maybe after my daughter goes to college. That’s not that far away…I mean, she just turned 18 months old.
