Monica will provide information on where to purchase block printing supplies, should you wish to continue practicing after the class. Cost of materials is included in course registration.

Monica Rico is a printmaker, barefoot farmer, and mother of boys at Wood Thrush Farm in Henniker, NH. New Addition to the Biblical Character Study series https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2018/8/new-addition-to-the-biblical-character-study-series This image "Forbidden Fruit" is part of a character study of women from the Bible. It is my take on Bathsheba. I wanted the image to convey both innocence and temptation. I believe that Bathsheba was innocent in the situation she found herself in with King David. The fruit and fauna she is surrounded by all have symbolic meaning. Fig (leaves) are a symbol of lust or fertility because of its many seeds. Pomegranates were used to represent resurrection or fertility. Thistles represent the curse of sin. Orange for symbolism of purity and chastity.

Thank you for fellow photographer and fellow Gordon alumi, E.F. Cianci for modeling for this intimate character study.

Guest Blogger, Dan Barr - 5 tips to Introduce your Kids to Photography https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2018/7/guest-blogger---5-tips-to-introduce-your-kids-to-photography Our post today is compliments of guest blogger, Dan Barr.  You can find a link to his website below!

How to introduce photography to your kid – 5 essential tips

In today’s world, most of us constantly have a camera on us via our mobile phone. We can just point and click. This makes taking photographs very easy. In addition to that, kids learn technology very fast. That is why teaching photography to kids today is easy and fun. In addition to helping them pick a new hobby, you give them an opportunity to learn a new skill and get out of the house rather than being on mobile games or video games the whole day or even worse, stuck to the television.

Letting your child control the camera has a surprising side result too. We start seeing the world via their eyes which has a very innocent and fresh outlook.

Let’s get started on the top five essential tips to introduce your child to photography.

1. Give your child access to a camera

Your child will fall in love with photography faster if they feel a sense of ownership over the camera. Give them a used one or your current one or even show them how to use the camera on an old phone of yours. Teach them to use the various features of the camera.

Once you have given it to them, step back and let them start experimenting with the camera. If you don’t want them to use an old camera, you can give them a good, inexpensive camera which is good for kids. The child-proof cameras that are available today are made especially for kids i.e. they have smaller grips and buttons and they are built to withstand drops. It would be great for your kid to have a new camera that they know is only for them. This will help reduce your interference too and allow your child to explore the camera on their own.

2. Teach the basics

When you start your kids on photography, it is important to teach them the basics. Some of the important points that you need to teach them is that they need to hold the camera steady so that they get an image in focus. One of the best ways to hold the camera steady is to use your body for support. You can demonstrate to them how to tuck their elbows against their body so that they can get support to hold the camera. They need to fill the frame with the subject of the image. They need to choose an angle to click the photo so that there background clutter is reduced as much as possible. Another important tip for a child is that they should always put the strap of the camera around their neck before they start to take photographs. A camera can easily fall from the hands of a child so this precaution is necessary.

3. Step back

Once your child has learnt the basics of photography and how they need to click photographs so that the camera is safe, the best thing that you can do for your child is to take a step back. Let them go out on their own and click the things that attract their eye. In the evening, they will come over with excitement in their eyes and show you what they have clicked. You can sit with them and make suggestions for each photo as to how they could have improved it. Make sure that you praise them for the photos which have been clicked well.

As parents, we are so used to protecting our children that we resist the need to let go and allow them to explore photography on their own. But unless they click photos on their own, they won’t be able to develop their own unique style.

4. Make clicking photographs easy and fun

As adults, we are used to advanced features and we try to explain that to our children. The problem is that when we complicate things, our children get disheartened and lose interest. The best thing you can do is just keep the camera on a point and click mode and let your child experiment with it.

Though you shouldn’t complicate things for your child when they use the camera, it doesn’t mean that you should make photography interesting by setting up challenges for them. You can ask them to click as many cars as they can or images of a certain color. Another interesting way to improve your child’s photography is to keep them as an official photographer for a family trip that you make. This allows them to capture your whole family having fun and will help them to create life-long memories.

You can also try to have a contest between your children where they can capture the most colorful photos or the photo which has the most people in it, etc.

5. Make use of the photos

The best way to encourage your child to click photos is to use the photos actively. You can get mugs online with the photos that they have clicked and they can use it daily. You can also take prints of the photos and stick it on the refrigerator. Another great way to use their photos is to make them into cards and send them for festivals to your friends and family.

Conclusion

Introducing your child to photography is introducing them to a whole new world of colors and images. Many children turn their childhood hobby into a life-long passion and even their career.

A quick recap of the essential tips when you introduce your child to photography: You should get them a camera which they can use completely for themselves. You should teach them the basics and once you have taught them the basics, you should let go and allow them to explore photography on their own. You should make clicking photos exciting, fun and enjoyable by setting up small challenges and competitions and finally, it would be great and would give your child a tremendous sense of validation if you print and use the photos.

Tween Sessions https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2018/3/tween-sessions 'Tween

noun

2. Also, tween, tweeny. a youngster between 10 and 12 years of age,considered too old to be a child and too young to be a teenager.

A few facts about today's tweens...

  • Forty-eight percent of tweens said they've been bullied.
  • Half of girls ages 8 to 10 are unhappy with their size, while 40 percent of fourth graders have been on a diet before and more than half of girls ages 9 to 15 have exercised to lose weight.
  • Tweens care what adults think about them and imitate their behaviors.

Our special 'tween sessions aim to encourage healthy body image and self-esteem concepts to children in this transitional and influential time of their lives.  It is a great way to tell your child that they are cherished for who they are and that they are as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside.  Not only is the final product, a portrait for your child to be proud of, the goal; but the experience of the portrait session itself, is one, that they will walk away from feeling extra special.

For a limited time (while supplies last), your 'tween will receive a AHP Cherished t-shirt and a This is Me Girl's Journal with the purchase of a portrait session.  Available for children ages 10-12.

Please contact the studio for more information about the sessions.

Upon reaching that Lofty Goal https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2018/1/upon-reaching-that-lofty-goal I am thrilled to announce that I received a Master of Photography degree from Professional Photographer's of America (PPA) at the association’s annual convention, Imaging USA, held January 14-16, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee.

What is that you might ask?

Well, PPA awards this degree in recognition of superior photographic competence demonstrated through photographic competition, advanced education and service to the profession.

A lot of time and energy, tears and excitement have gone into the earning of the degree.  I had many mentors along the way, nudging me along the path and helping me to push beyond my comfortable borders in order to strive for excellence in my craft.

My friend, Jeff Dachowski, M.Photog.Cr., CPP was one of these mentors, and I was honored that he agreed to be my sponsor at the degree ceremony and walk with me on stage and hang the degree on my neck.  Here we are with PPA President, Rob Behm, M.Photog.Cr., CPP the night of the ceremony.

It feels validating to receive this accolade, but with any artist's craft, the journey does not end.  You have to constantly be honing your skills and reaching beyond.  I am on to the next thing.  I encourage you to set a goal for yourself and work towards it.

yours truly,

Allison McGrail, Master Photographer

PS: Here is my 15 seconds on stage.  I made it across without tripping!

AHP has moved! https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2017/8/ahp-has-moved

Big changes have been happening this summer for AHP! I have moved! But don't worry, I haven't gone far, just one mile down the road. I have moved the business out of my home into a 1600 square foot commercial space in New Boston that is surrounded by the library, the post office, the pizza place and my favorite, the river! I will have the space now to better accomindate my clients, host larger family sessions, as well as various classes and workshops. I am working hard at renovating the space to fall in line with my vision and I can't wait to share it with everyone. I am already working out of the new space, but plan to have a grand reopening event in late September. Also in September, I will be offering a Clicks for Kids class after school, a few Barre classes, and my ever popular Back to School portrait event. Keep a look out for more info to follow on these. Oh! And AHP is sporting a new logo for our fresh new look!

Lynch Creek Farm https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2016/12/lynch-creek-farm A few weeks ago I was approached by a Lynch Creek Farm in Washington state about collaborating with them.

They create the most beautiful wreaths!  Check them out here.

They asked if I would use one of their wreaths in one of my sessions, and I said I would love to, of course.  What a fun idea!

So I chose their Eastern wreath.  I loved the simplicity of it.  It came a few days later and it is one of the most beautiful wreaths I have seen!  It is made of white pine instead of the more traditional balsam and has Washington grown wheat and broad flat salal leaves incorporated into it.

Here are a few images from the sessions I was able to incorporate the wreath into.

On Becoming Certified https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2015/8/on-becoming-certified

I recently received word that I passed the requirements to become a Certified Professional Photographer!  I am thrilled to have accomplished this goal.  I am 1 of only 19 in New Hampshire! So what does that mean?  Well, it means according Professional Photographers of America, I have met a certain standard of what a professional photographer should know and produce the quality of work that a professional in the industry should create.  It is a two part process, first a proctored exam, and then a portfolio review of 15 images.  Six images were compulsory and showed a certain technique, and nine were client images.  All these had to be taken from my last two years of work.  Here are the images that I submitted in my portfolio.

So why would this matter?  You can certainly work as a professional photographer without being certified, but why did I set this goal for myself? I believe that it will give my clients confidence in their experience with me.  Here are the things that you will get with a certified professional photographer (taken from PPA's website)

Consistency. CPPs know how to achieve great results—every time. You get a strong collection of images that tell your story, not a few lucky snapshots, and you will work with someone who knows how to produce a quality image under any circumstances.

Technical Skills. CPPs are more than picture takers. They are students of art, lighting, posing, fashion and even interior design. They combine these elements to create images that fit your unique style and become works of art you will treasure for generations.

Unique Artistry. CPPs have the skills to create unique, customized works of art—not cookie-cutter pictures. They follow an artistic vision. It’s your story captured as a collection of art.

Professionalism. When you hire a CPP, you know you're getting someone who is willing to go the extra mile to deliver the best possible images. They are business owners who thrive on customer service and satisfaction, and they continuously aim to produce products that exceed your—and their—best expectations. These images are keepsakes whose stories you'll tell time and time again and treasure forever.

Check out this video!

Kids, Camp and Messy Hands https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2015/7/kids-camp-and-messy-hands I recently returned from spending two weeks up in Maine at our church camp, that my husband and both grew up at and where we met.  Needless to say, it is a very special place to us and we continue to volunteer each year.  This year I decided to teach a merit badge for a week and it was a GREAT experience.  I had 21 kids sign up for my merit badge class (which was about a 1/3 of the campers) and they were split into two classes.  The subject was photography, of course, but I wanted this class to be more hands on and tactile then working in Photoshop.  I also did not want the class to be a lecture format going over the technical aspects of photography.  So what I came up with were some alternative photography projects that were easy enough for the 8 year olds and interesting enough for the teenagers.  We had a BLAST!

First of all here are my classes!

Now for some of the projects we did!

Sun prints are fast and easy and no chemicals or darkroom required.  You can get kits right from amazon.

Next we made Chemigrams.  This involves photo chemicals and photo paper but no darkroom!  Basically we dipped leaves into photo developer and pressed on the photo paper and then washed in fixer.

So cool, right?

Then we made citrasolvs, which are made by spraying the strong natural cleaner, Citrasolv, on national geographic pages which turns the ink to liquid and makes awesome effects.

We then used the citrasolvs to collage with.  I asked them to incorporate the summer's theme, which is "Fearless" into the collages, but some forgot the "less" part, lol.

Our 4th project was the biggest and best!  We made photo transfers onto wood.  I had my husband pull some authentic Gander Brook wood from the burn pile and cut into pieces for the campers.  Each camper choose a favorite image, which I had printed in reverse onto regular printer paper with a LASER printer (not ink jet).  We then glued them face down to the wood, using a gel medium and let dry.  Then came the hard part, which was removing the back of the paper with a wet wash cloth and our fingers.  The first layer came off easy but then it became tedious as we had to continue to rub the tiny bits of paper away with our fingers.  Our finger tips became raw and I had to keep saying that this was a lesson in PERSEVERANCE!  The final step was to add a top coat of mod podge to seal them.

They came out great!  Other lessons learned was that there is beauty in imperfection and to realize that the end product might not come out how you thought and that is OK!

Some close ups!

The best part of the whole experience was hearing what the kids said...

"I am so proud of my piece"

"I have done the best artwork I have ever done in this class"

"I think I have found my career."

"I am so happy with how it came out!" (from one girl who was very disappointed at how her photo transfer was coming.)

Thinking it may be fun to do a summer camp some time along these ideas here at the studio!  Would you have a child interested in this?  Or even yourself?  Let me know!

Seniors, tell your story! https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2014/9/seniors-tell-your-story You’re a senior in high school! You’ve come a long way…and you have a story to tell. You may or may not be a writer, but one of the ways you will share your story for generations to come is through your senior portrait.

I was a senior in high school back in 1995. My hair had finally recovered from the horrible, chopped-way-too-short haircut that I started 8th grade with, and was now long, very long, and still very curly. I had gotten rid of the glasses that graced my nose a few years earlier in yearbook pictures, and now wore contacts. Braces were gone too. In one picture I’m wearing my cap and gown. In another, I’m holding my fluffy white cat, “Kitt” who I literally grew up with. And in another, I’m posing in my riding outfit, reminding me of the day when my grandfather sent me a horse and the ensuing years of equine love that eventually dwindled as I got busier and busier with high school activities. Location was on the same university campus where I had attended high school and where I would go on to attend and graduate from college. All pieces of my story.

So what is your story? For many seniors, this year in your life will be one of the most memorable and eventful; the end of many familiar things, and the beginning of new adventures. Your senior portrait is meant to reflect who you are at this time in your life, and give glimpses into the person you are becoming. Think about the images from your portrait session as telling a story.

Thinking about your senior portrait, but not sure where to start? Here are some ideas…

~Location:  Your senior portrait can be in the studio, at a location of your choice, or both. Do you have a special place that really speaks of who you are? Choosing the right location can help you feel at ease, convey a meaningful part of your story and spark conversation for generations to come.

~“But I like to go barefoot!” No problem. Your clothing choices are a huge part of the person you are. Choose clothing that’s comfortable and shows your personality. Choose colors that will complement both your skin-tone and your environment.

~Don’t be afraid to speak up! Have an idea for the best, epic photo of all time, but wonder if Allison will think you’re crazy? Remember, some of the best images have come from “thinking outside the box.”

~Bring a friend! Close friends can be a major part of your high school memories. They’re the ones who have shared in your story. So, feel free to bring along a friend and include them in some of your pictures.

You have a story to tell – the story of who you are, and of who you are becoming. So, let’s make some amazing memories of your story through images! Congratulations on being a senior in high school! May this year be a wonderful journey for you.

~Jessica Clater

Yup, I'm one of those people... https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2014/3/yup-im-one-of-those-people We would like to introduce you to Jessica Clater!  Jessica has been working at AHP as our 2nd event photographer for almost 10 years.  She now is excited to be a contributing writer for the blog, when she isn't soaking up all the joys of life as a wife to Phil and mother to daughter, Eliana!  We hope you enjoy her perspective as much as we do!

Yep, I’m one of those people. I don’t have a wedding album, just a proof album.

My wedding day was one of the most amazing days of my life! I love my husband like crazy to this day and yet, I never ordered a wedding album. In fact, it was probably three years before I even had a portrait on my wall from that day. And even though, through a set of circumstances, I ended up with all the negatives from my wedding, I still haven’t designed and printed my own album…and I’m in the business. You know, the plumber has leaky faucets in his house, the accountant is late with his taxes, and I, a photographer, don’t have a wedding album.

I really don’t have an excuse. I’ve been married for twelve years to the love of my life and I’ve been a photographer for the majority of that time. But, life got busy and there were other priorities with my time and money that always seemed to pop up.

Which brings me to the topic of this post – the “Images on CD only” packages that many brides are requesting. In today’s digital photography world, many brides are opting to pay only for the photographer’s time and travel and then a CD of images. This type of pricing is a huge leap from the days of package pricing that included a designed wedding album and other tangible values like framed and matted wall prints. This cost-cutting mindset may sound great at the outset to a bride who is trying to keep to a budget. However, the problem comes when the happy couple steps out of the car or off the plane or boat from their honeymoon and into…life (which may include an adorable baby, or two, much sooner than anticipated).

With the entire process of not only narrowing down and choosing images, but also designing pages and choosing covers, styles and a place to print their album, there’s a possibility that a bride may not get around to having a finished album in hand for years, if ever.

The wedding album, wall portraits, parent albums, thank you cards…all of these are the final, finished, beautiful product of beautifully produced images. These precious memories, captured on one of the most special days of a couple’s life are meant to be touched and seen often, daily. They should be there over the mantle or on the table, beautifully displayed for friends, family and guests to see. They should be there when that first child is born – a daily reminder of the love that brought them into the world.

As photographers, our images are a form of art. The final piece is not just the image itself sitting somewhere on a CD or on a flash drive or on a facebook page. The finished piece of art includes the presentation: the carefully chosen mat and frame that perfectly complement and display the portrait of the bride, glowing as she waits to walk down the aisle. The full page spread in the album depicting each precious moment captured during the first dance, each image carefully placed and enhanced by design details on the page.

When a client pays a photographer for their services, they’re not just paying for pictures. Because, you see, photographers aren’t just, well, photographers! They’re artists, designers, dreamers. The final, finished product should be a true work of art and design. When a client who isn’t a photographer chooses to quickly print a few images from their CD at the local drugstore, so much of the purity and beauty of an image can be lost.

So, trust us. The extra expense of having a finished album and wall portrait from your wedding will be well worth it.

Yep, I’m one of those people. Someday I’ll have a wedding album, maybe after my daughter goes to college. That’s not that far away…I mean, she just turned 18 months old.

~Jessica Clater

Meet our Clients! https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2013/8/meet-our-clients
This month we would like to introduce you to Alyssa Van Guilder and her little family that has been growing!  Alyssa is the owner and artist behind the amazing retreat in Goffstown, Apotheca!  The little depot building has been transformed into a coffee and tea shoppe with yummy goodies and smiling staff.  Also, a place to sit and relax, take in a class, or enjoy open mic night!  And of course, the flower shop is always meeting and exceeding our expectations, with Alyssa's wonderful selections from the Boston flower market and her staff that goes the extra mile!  Take a look at the dynamic woman behind it all...

Please tell us a little about your family!
I share my days with 5 wonderful people!  The man of my life, Pierre, and my 4 children, Noah who is 12, Brynne who is 9, Cochlea who is 2, and Totem who is 3 months.

Can you share how you began your artwork in flora and fauna?
My first job at age 12 was for Farmer Dale Brown--he was our neighbor in rural Minnesota.  I started picking green beans and eventually ended up in the Green Houses working with flowers--that's where the magic happened-and my relationship with living blossoms began.   I am an artist and  love meaningful beauty --flowers are among the most powerful of all artful things, in my opinion. :)

How did you come to NH?
My father was born and raised in Vermont.  After a family reunion that took place in the great state of New Hampshire, I fell in love with it here.  Soon I concocted a plan to get as many of us 9 siblings-together with my parents-to move here!  While my two older sister's lived in Chester, NH, the rest of us were scattered everywhere.  I had one sibling still in my birth state of Alaska, one in Virginia, two- including myself- in Texas, and a handful in Minnesota.  It took some time, but eventually the bulk of us landed in New Hampshire.

What brought you to the place of taking the leap and opening Apotheca ?
It was dream that festered for years and then necessity invited me to take the leap.  I responded with a blindfolded jump.

What makes the long days worth it?
People--I have come to know so many incredible people, and many customers have become like family.  Also, being able to spend energy on a creative effort that I believe in is a gift, even on a 16 hour day!

How do you balance the work and the passion?
I would say the passion creates the work, therefore the work is the passion.  However, it's always a trick finding time to do laundry! :)

Experience is Everything https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2013/6/experience-is-everything Recently I got to have a great experience that I think is so important for photographers to do for themselves... I got on the other side of the camera!

I have recently started offering, what I am calling Bella sessions, which are sessions that include professional hair and makeup application along with a portrait session that is not only about showing how beautiful you are, but making you feel as beautiful as you are.  These sessions can be "boudoir" in nature or simply appropriate for a business headshot, or anywhere in between.

I had to opportunity to do this for myself, photographed by my friend, and fellow photographer, Nylora Bruleigh.  This is her website, if you want to check her work out  www.photographybynylora.com

I think it is important for photographers to get on the other side once and while, so we can know what it feel like to be our clients.  I can better serve my clients, because of this.  And it was FUN!

Here are some of my favorites!

Field of Dreams https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2013/6/field-of-dreams Last week I met up with Alex and Jillian at Alex's childhood home, where they will have their wedding reception this fall.  It was a beautiful early summer evening, the kind that makes you just feel utterly happy.

I love this little series, so natural!

Meet our Clients! https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2013/5/meet-our-clients This month we would like to introduce you to Jenny Garby of J. Bella Salon!  Jenny and her husband have the cutest little girl who seems to be the apple of their eye!  And a wonderful AHP model!

Jenny, please tell us about your family!

I have a pretty large family with 3 sisters and a brother.  I met my husband Tom through an online dating site and have been married for 2 1/2 years. We have a beautiful little 13m old Emma who is just starting to walk.

How did you get involved in the styling industry?

Honestly I couldn't afford college at the time.  My mother suggested going to hair school and I happened to love it. It was the best thing that could have happened. I got more involved a few years into it and started working for a color company.  I taught their brand color and new techniques for a couple years.

How and when did you begin your adventure with J. Bella?

In 2001 the salon I was working at was going to sell their salon to someone that didn't want booth renters. I started looking for a space to move to and there wasn't really anything I liked that was open so I asked my friend if she wanted to open something together. We found the perfect space for the 2 of us.  After a year we were growing out the space so we added another stylist an doubled our size. We just kept needing more space so we ended up adding another unit 2 years later.  The bank that was on the other side of us was open so we ended up in our space that we are in now in 2007.  We started out with 650sq feet an are now at 2,300!

How do you balance life as a business owner and mother?

It has been a transition. My business partner Jennifer and I both have children and we split things up pretty equally.  I have a great support system that helps with watching Emma so I can work. I don't work nearly as many hours as I used to.  We also promoted one of our receptionists to Mgr so she helps a lot with the salon making sure things are done, orders are placed Etc..

I just have to add I really love what I do. I think people should find a career doing something they really enjoy. My clients have become friends. One of our clients delivered my baby, is my Dentist, our accountant and so on.  You get to know people over the years. I have a few clients that I have had for over 15 years!  I really think the old saying us true "If you find a job you love, you will never work a day in your life"

Sorry for rambling on, I just get mushy when I think of how lucky I am!!

A note from Allison Hope Photography:  We are excited to share that J. Bella is the host for our Bella Sessions on May 19th!   Jenny is also going to be our hair designer for the sessions!  Please call us to book your session soon 867-4970.

Never Stop Learning https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2013/5/never-stop-learning I am back from a great long weekend at the annual NHPPA conference.  I have been a member of this group for over 10 years and this has always been a time for me, not only to connect to other photographers, but to regroup and refocus my business.  I am always filled to the brim when I return with new ideas, techniques and a sense of excitement.  This was my first year on the board of directors, as membership chair, so I got to experience a different take on how it all comes together, and see just how much work it is! I was inducted this weekend as the 2nd VP, and I am excited to start fulfilling my responsibilities.

I am also excited to share with you that I received my Associate Colleague of Photography degree this weekend.  This is earned in reward for service to the association as well as for photographic expertise.

We also have a print competition and I am excited to share that all my prints were awarded ribbons!

"Fallen from Grace" earned a Blue Ribbon!

"Baby Doll" earned a Red ribbon

"Our Jumpin' Joys" earned a Red ribbon

"Fetching Water from the Wood" earned a White ribbon

"Tummy Time" earned a White ribbon

Meet our Clients! https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2013/4/meet-our-clients This month we would like to introduce you to the Ayotte/Kenison family!

John is an attorney in the area and Melissa is a 2nd generation glass artist!
Both of their kids are inquisitive and full of smiles!

We have asked Melissa to share with us some about her amazing talent working with glass!

Navajo basket with Black Eyed Susan bouquet!

1.
Please teach us a little about your art form!

As a glass artist I create very tiny, life like sculptures or ideas which tend to mostly reference nature- flora and fauna.  This is done with a technique called lamp working or flame working. I make small leaves, petals, flowers, or tendrils- all in glass. After the design is created it is then carefully encased in molten clear glass, and  shaped into various forms. Primarily this tradition meets its end in something called a paperweight, but the word paperweight is quite limiting, often bringing to mind the acrylic or plastic butterfly in a dome like piece.  These art glass pieces are far from that .  In fact, I’ve started to use the encasement process to push the natural limits of the glass and create other more sculptural items -- stones, Navajo baskets, bud vases and so on. Keep in mind each of these has realistic bouquets or references encased inside the glass.

  Where did you learn?

I’m very fortunate to be a second generation glass artist. My father Rick Ayotte has been working glass in various forms for 50 years.  His expertise allows me to start at a higher level with the glass. The medium itself, glass, has so many nuances and “secrets” that are more easily discovered with the help of master artist. I didn’t grow up always working with glass. He encouraged me to get an education and work in the world for someone else before even considering this path.  It wasn’t until graduate school for counseling psychology, when I desperately needed to earn money to support myself, that I sat down at the bench with the torch and fell head first in love with the process.

Where are you able to work?

My studio is approximately 20 feet from my home.  I feel privileged to be near to my kids while they grow and enjoy having lunch with them or transporting them here and there when I can.  It’s not always easy to keep them out of the studio, but we’ve made it clear they can visit, but not stay all the time when the sitter is here!  There have to be boundaries, but as they grow older (my son is 5 and daughter 3) the roar of the torch is not as frightening as it once was and their intrigue grows.  I guess we take it as it comes and when I’m really working hot glass, it’s obvious to them that I’m unable to give attention.  I think both my father and I enjoy the visits!  After all, we’ve always had an easel and work area for them to play at.

How do you balance family and work?
I try to keep a regular schedule five days a week 9-4 so that everyone maintains some sort of tempo.  Of course, it never works out perfectly, but at least this keeps us all going.  Upcoming shows and time crunches generally change everything, but we deal with that mostly spring and fall, so the pattern helps us stay balanced. My husband John Kenison is super supportive, trying to give me extra time when I need it or watching the kids when I’m traveling.   And I couldn’t be productive without work out time, so that takes priority for balancing mind and body.

How did you end up with your studio and home in New Hampshire?

I am a New Hampshire native. I went away to North Carolina and California for school, but New Hampshire is home.  Growing up we spent a lot of time vacationing in northern NH and the lakes, ocean and woods is where I derive so much of my inspiration.  New Hampshire wild flowers are a part of many of my sculptures and I couldn’t imagine a richer place to be for a nature artist. Our time in New Boston has really enhanced that experience for me.

Meet our Clients! https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2013/1/meet-our-clients We are excited to introduce to you...
The Carle Family!

Nathan is a Physics teacher at a local H.S., Rebecca a viola and violin teacher, and their two active children have a wonderful zest for life!

We enjoyed getting to know them better during our Holiday mini-sessions!

We saw another mom with a business and a rich musical background, working hard for her family and trying to balance it all.  So we asked her to share more...

Can you tell us about the beginning of your music career/life?
The early years and the start of your love?

I started taking viola lessons in fourth grade, when our elementary school's orchestra program started.  I'm kind of unusual since I started playing on viola, while many players start on violin and switch to viola.   Through high school I took private lessons, played in lots of small chamber groups, the school string orchestras and the various weekend orchestra festivals that happened about 3 times a year.  Two highlights of those years were my summer attendance at the New York State School of Orchestral Studies, a youth program that had us playing some of the same music that the Philadelphia Orchestra played, while being coached by the principal players of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and my two years being one of the few student members of the Schenectady Symphony, in Schenectady, NY, when I learned how to work in an adult musical setting.

When I went to college, I immediately signed up for the symphony orchestra, private lessons, and string quartet coaching, but my academic studies remained focused on Classics, Religious Studies and Anthropology in preparation for my dream of being an archaeologist.  After graduation from college I continued to pursue archaeology and then museum collections care.  Between museum internships, graduate school, starting a career and then having kids, I took about 10 years off from regularly playing viola.  It wasn't until my youngest was about 2 that I started playing again with an adult ensemble.  I was understandably rusty, but my technique returned faster than I expected and within three months I auditioned and was accepted into the viola section of the New Hampshire Philharmonic and began playing chamber music again with new-found friends. I rediscovered a joy and love of music within myself that I hadn't realized was missing.  My time out playing viola brought me great peace, which is so greatly needed for a stay at home mom with young kids.  In the years since, I have spent a lot of time playing viola with various local NH ensembles, but my primary musical commitment is the the Nashua Chamber Orchestra, where I am Principal Violist.

One of my new music friends appreciated my passion of music and suggested that I consider teaching.  She encouraged me to learn more about the Suzuki Method  and after attending  their introductory class I found that she was correct.  The Suzuki Method fit my take on learning and teaching very well, and a year later I took the Book 1 Teacher Training (Which works for both violin and viola) and began taking students.  Since then I have completed Book 2 Training and my studio has grown from my initial three students to 13 viola and violin students.  The experience has been wonderful.  I really enjoy working with the variety of people and ages and hope to give each student the foundation needed to reach their musical goals, whether it is to pursue music as a career or to keep music as an enjoyable activity in their lives.

Tell us about how you and your family came to be in New Boston?

When we moved to New Hampshire 11 years ago we lived near Concord where my husband taught at Concord High School.  When Nathan switched to teaching physics at Souhegan High School in Amherst, we knew that our home north of Concord was too far away for his daily commute and began looking for a new home.  We narrowed our search down to a house in Wilton and our home in New Boston.   Our home in New Boston won out due to the location.  The house needed a lot of fixing, in fact the water heater died the afternoon that we moved in (we knew it was on its last legs), but the location was quiet and peaceful.  Having a heron fly over the house when we were viewing it didn't hurt either.  We knew that New Boston was a nice town from all the literature, but we had no idea how welcoming and warm the community would be, and how stellar the NBCS is.  We feel very lucky to have found this home in New Boston and by all plans we are sticking around for the long hall, since we have found our home.

Share with us your families love/or not, of music?

My husband played clarinet and piano as a kid, and still plays piano for fun.  Helen is taking violin lessons from me and is doing well.  Peter started taking piano lessons and then tried viola and neither really spoke to him.  His heart is with the brass instruments and I expect he will take up trombone or french horn in a few years.  My extended family is quite supportive and musical.  My mother is a retired school music teacher and a violinist, my older sister started college as a music performance major on cello until an injury led to a complete change in career, and my father-in-law plays guitar on occasion.

What is your most memorable teaching moment?

I don't think I can pinpoint one specific moment, but there is a category of moments that happens for every student at some point.  There are little things that each student has to learn:  the correct hand position on the bow; the movement that your bow arm makes; how the instrument is held under your head; what shapes your fingers make as they are placed on the strings.  Some of these positions take some time to learn and students put a lot of focus on consciously keeping their body in the correct position.  Eventually those positions become natural, second nature, a habit.  That is a special moment.  Often the student won't realize when that has happened, but they maintain the correct position while their attention is focused somewhere else.  When I get a chance to point that out, the joy and in some cases relief that the student displays is really exciting, especially if they had been challenged by that for a long time.

What do you love about owning your own small business?

Easy- the flexibility.  I can work around the needs and schedules of my family.

Snowflakes & Smiles https://www.allisonhopephotography.com/blog/2013/1/snowflakes-smiles

I just wanted to share some of my favorite images from a wedding with documented the end of December!

Hannah and Zak got married just a few days after Christmas on a beautiful day with the just the right amount of snowflakes!

I love the expression on both thier faces as Hannah walked down the aisle with her Dad to Zak.

Wouldn't you love to know what he whispered in her ear?

Everyone in the bridal party braved the cold to get some great images outside!

Porch lighting is the best!

You can't tell they were freezing!

I love their expressions!

Hannah's bouquet was stunning!  Simple white roses with silver broaches interspersed.  It really was exquisite!

Hannah changed into awesome silver Chucks for the reception!

They had their wedding at a church school where they went to high school together!  We created this image right where they had their lockers in high school!

Having two photographers not only means you get different angles and viewpoints, but sometimes we use completely different lighting techniques!

I just love the atmosphere they created by transforming a gymnasium into a winter wonderland, lighting the space with a multitude of LED balls and lights!

I love the tender moment of the bride's dad holding his week old grandson at his first wedding experience.

The father/daughter dance, an equally tender moment between them.

I loved how Hannah is looking at her Mother, including her in the moment.

Snowflake cupcakes!  As sweet as the couple!

Another tender moment between Hannah and her little brother that I had to share.

They even had a special dance for just the two of them.  You could tell they practiced!

Hannah and Zak changed before leaving the reception.  I do not see this very often anymore...not only practical but kinda fun!  Her simple white dress is super cute and shows of the Chucks!

And off they go!  Anxious to start the next chapter of their lives together!

Here is to a sweet life!
